Barbus barillioides, Boulenger, 1914 Origin:Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia and southern Congo. Etymology: unk Synonyms:Barbodes
barillioides, Capoeta barillioides First import: Unk, 1963 Description: See picture Care:Shoalfish, keep 6 or more fish in a densely planted tank, preferably with floating plants to reduce the light, and with a dark soil. Some free swimming space should be made available in the front of the tank. Waterconditions, soft acidic water, preferably filtered over peat. The fish usually inhabit the middle and lower areas in the tank. monthly 20 % waterchanges are required to keep the fish healthy Temperature:23-26 degrees Feeding: Omnivorous, all food is taken. Size:Up to 5 cm pH: 5.5-7.0 Breeding:Barbus barillioides has been bred in aqauria, but not very often. In a tank as described in the care section the fish will sometimes breed. The fish will deposit the eggs in extremely densely planted zones(javamoss!), up to 300 eggs per female, which will hatch in approxiamtely 2 days, and be free swimming after another 3-4 days. Fry should be fed infusoria in the beginning. The parents should be removed after breeding, since they eat the eggs. Sexual
dimorphism:males are a bit
thinner. Prices:Unk Additional: If kept in bright light or single, the fish will turn extremely shy, and ofter perish. Barbus barillioides is also easily scared by lights that turn on/off.
