Origin: China, Hongkong to Hainan.Barbus semifasciolatus

Etymology: semifasciolatus=

Synonyms: Capoeta guentheri, Barbus schuberti

First European import: Germany, 1909, Vereinigten Zierfischzüchtereien.

Description: The picture shows the "schuberti" form.

Care: An easy fish, very suitable for the community tank. Neutral to slightly acidic water, soft to medium hard, some plants in the back, and some swimming space in the front. A bit of sunlight now and then is highly appreciated by the animals. Monthly waterchanges, and some filtration is all the animals require.

Temperature: 18-24 degrees.Barbus semifasciolatus

Feeding: Omnivorous, all food is accepted.

Size: Up to 10 cm, usually smaller in aquariums.

pH: 6.5-7.5

Breeding: In a 60 cm tank, densely planted, and filled with fresh water the fish will usually spawn the nest morning, especially if the tank is hit by sunlight at that time. Up to 300 eggs are laid, which will hatch in 1-1.5 day. Fry are easy to raise, parents should be removed after spawning since they will eat the eggs.

Sexual dimorphism: Males are smaller and more intense colored.

Prices: Netherlands, 0.45-0.75€.
