Barbus ticto
Barbus ticto, Hamilton, 1822


Origin:Sri lanka, India, Pakistan, in slow and fast flowing rivers.

Etymology: ticto=Barbus ticto

Synonyms: Cyprinus ticto, Barbus sloliczkanus, Puntius ticto, Rothee ticto, Systomus ticto, Systomus tripunctatus.

First import: Germany, 1903, H. Stüve.

Care: Easy to keep fish, hardy, well suited for the average community tank, provided the temperature isn't too high. They are best kept in soft acidic water, although they can also adapt to other circumstances. Some hardy plants in the back, and some free swimming space in the front are beneficial to the animals well-being.

Temperature:14-22 degrees.

Feeding:Omnivorous. All food is accepted.

Barbus tictoSize:Up to 10 cm.

pH: 6.0-7.5

Breeding:Larger tanks with lowered waterlevel, densely planted and well filtered. It's best to add a female with more than onemale to such a setup. Temperature and waterlevel should be raised slowly, up to 25 degrees and 20 cm. Up to 500 eggs are laid by a single female, which will hatch in approximately 36 hours. Fry require large amounts of small food. Immediately after spawning the parents should be removed, since else almost all eggs will be eaten.

Additional: The fish should be kept cool in the winter, around 14 degrees.
