Barbus titteya, Deriniyagala, 1929

Origin: Sri LankaBarbus_titteya

Etymology: titteya=

Synonyms: Puntius titteya, Barbus frenatus

First European import: Germany, 1936, By W. Odenwald.

Barbus titteyaDescription: See pictures.

Care: Easy to keep fish, can be kept in pairs or in schools in the community tank. Not very particular towards waterconditions, although soft slightly acidic water is preferred. Densely planted regions, driftwood, and some floating plants will create a suitable environment for the fish.

Temperature: 23-26 degrees.

Feeding: Omnivorous, all food is accepted.

Size: Up to 5 cm.

pH: 6.0-7.5

Breeding: Can be done in a densely planted small tank. Lower the waterlevel, and raise the temperature to 26 degrees.Barbus titteya Water in the tank should be slightly acidic, pH 6.0 and soft. Breeding is best done in pairs, so add a pair to such a setup. The female should be ready to mate, , like the fish in the picture on the right. Usually spawning will start the next morning, and will finish several hours later. Since the fish are egg eaters, it's recommended to provide some sort of protection for the eggs, or to feed the parents during spawning. After spawning has finished the parents should be removed. Up to 300 eggs are produced, which will hatch in 24 hours.

Sexual dimorphism: Females less colorful, and with fuller bellies.
