Botia helodes
Botia helodes, Sauvage, 1876

Origin:Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, in brooks and rivers.

Etymology: Unk.

Synonyms: None, often mislabelled Botia striata or Botia hymenophysa in shops.

First European import:Germany, 1929, by E. Riechers.

Description: See picture, every greyish band has a dark side.

Care: The fish are very territorial and aggressiv when they get bigger. They lead a hidden life. Not very suitable for the community tank. The fish require a sandy soil with lots of hideouts, and will dig for food, so secure plants and stones. Frequent small waterchanges are required, sensitive to pollution.

Temperature: 24-30 degrees.

Feeding: All food is taken, will also eat small fish if they can catch them.

Size: Up to 22 cm.

pH: 6.0-7.5

Breeding: Unknown.

Sexual dimorphism: Unknown.

Prices:Netherlands: 6-10€.

Additional: Like all botia very sensitive to medication.

Botia helodes can make really loud crackling noises.
