Brachydanio rerio
Brachydanio rerio, Hamilton, 1822

Origin:IndiaBrachydanio rerio

Etymology: rerio=

Synonyms: Cyprinus rerio, perilampus striatus, Danio rerio.

First European import: Germany, 1905, by P. Matte.

Description: See pictures. A naturally occuring form has been described as B. frankei.

Care: Brachydanio rerio requires a 80 cm tank minimum, with a lot of free swimming space. They should be kept in schools of 4-8 animals. Water conditions neutral to slightly acidic, well filtered water, which shouldn't be too hard. Some plants on the side of the tank, and a few floating plants are appreciated by the fish.

Temperature:18-24 degrees

Feeding: Omnivorous, all food is accepted.

Size: 6 cm

pH: 6.5-7.5

Brachydanio rerioBreeding: Large tanks with lowered waterlevel, temperature around 25 degrees. Frequent waterchanges, and decent (peat) filtration. Lots of plants, or other substrate, and the tank should receive some sunlight. In such a tank, add a female alone, and a few days later, add the male. The pair shoul be carefully selected, since the fish usually will not spawn with a random partner. Up to 500 eggs can be laid on the plants, which will hatch after 2 days, and be free swimming after another day. Fry grow really fast.

Sexual dimorphism: Males a bit more colorfull, females larger and with larger bellies.

Prices: Netherlands: 0.75€

Additional: A breeding form with long fins exists.
