Crossocheilus siamensis
Crossocheilus siamensis, Smith, 1931

Origin: Thailand, Malayan peninsula.

Etymology: siamensis, named after the origin of the fish, Siam (Now Thailand)

Synonyms: Epalzeorhynchus siamensis

First European import: Germany, 1962, by A. Werner.

Description: See pictures(Compare them to Epalzeorhynchus kallopterus)

Care: One of the best algae eaters available, they even eat hairy algae! Best kept single in smaller tanks, or with more fish in larger tanks(over 1 meter). As juveniles they are only aggressive towards their own kind, but as they grow older, they may show some aggression towrds other fish as well. Requires a spacious tank, with good filtration, and is best kept at neutral pH.

Temperature: 22-26 degrees

Feeding: Algae as juveniles, various live foods.

Size: Up to 14 cm.

pH: 6.0-8.0 Hardness: up to 20 dGHCrossocheilus siamensis

Breeding: Unknown, the fish has not been bred in aquaria.

Sexual dimorphism:Unknown.

Prices: 2-3€

Additional: The easiest way to distinguish these fish from Epalzeorhynchus kallopterus is the fin color. Crossocheilus siamensis has transparent fins, where E. kallopterus has nicely colored fins.
