Betta albimarginata, Kottelat & Ng, 1994

Origin: Indonesia: Borneo, North Kalimantan, near Timur, in the Sebuku river.

Etymology: Albi=white, Marginata=border, referring to the white stripe.

Synonyms: None

Description: See pictures

Care: Easy to keep and breed fish. No particular waterrequirements. Suitable even for the community tank, although the fish are too rare to do that.

Temperature: 22-26 degrees.

Feeding: Live and frozen food.

Size: 5 cm.

pH: 6.0-7.5

Breeding: Mouthbrooder, female takes the initiativ. If the fish are fed well, and kept in clean water, breeding will occur every 6-8 weeks. The male will release the fry after 12 days, sometimes longer(14-15days). Between 3 and 40 fry are released, after which the male looses intrest. The parents do not eat the fry, but older fry will eat their younger siblings.

Sexual dimorphism: Male colorful, female brown.

Prices: € 10,-

Additional: A very similar species has been described as Betta channoides.
